LANDSCAPES

"In his landscapes [Paul] transposes nature into emotional tonalities of pulsing color which stand forth like strong chords in the eye of the beholder," writes John L Lash about Paul's New Mexico landscape paintings.

Paul himself describes his intensely expressionistic landscapes as "creating one's own form of language." "I want my paintings to hit you in the face. I don't want anything hidden behind colored smokescreens. I want everything to be right there." This objective is realized through works in which sky, clouds, mountains, water and other natural elements are compressed into dense, dynamic planes. "I have no interest in depicting deep and vast space," Paul says, "because it has nothing to do with two-dimentional pictoral language. What results is a push/pull dynamic—a compressed space. Hans Hoffman and Stuart Davis also talked a lot about this. You have to respect the integrity of the two-dimensional surface. That's what pure painting is. It has nothing to do with creating aerial perspective or deep space. It's the opposite of that. By creating a dynamic through the use of color, planes, and marks I make, one becomes aware of the surface. I do everything in my power not to depict deep space."
